Have you heard people talking about agenda-setting, the elaboration likelihood model, or the spiral of silence and been unsure about what they were referring to? Do you need to explain to your clients or collaborators the importance of alt-text, targeted messaging, or trust in communication? Just like any other field, science communication has jargon that creates barriers between scientists, communicators, and science communication researchers.
SciComm Lexicon is a new visual glossary of science communication that seeks to make the field more accessible. Created collaboratively by a science communication practitioner, a freelance artist, and a science communication researcher, the in-progress glossary will include nearly 200 terms, with every entry including links to relevant peer-reviewed literature. An accompanying graphic novel will provide an engaging way to learn the lexicon of science communication.
With its accessible explanations, references to research, and visual storytelling, SciComm Lexicon will help us all understand and apply best practices of science communication. It’s a great example of the power of partnerships between science communication researchers and practitioners.
