ASC is personally asking our community to take two-minutes to review and digitally sign the below open letter, committing to 2023 as the year we build wide-reaching trust in science.
Why an open letter? It’s time to talk openly about the gatekeeping in science communication.
Science communicators come in all different forms, from researchers at universities and medical professionals, to journalists and content creators, to chocolatiers communicating the chemistry behind chocolate, to community leaders, to educators & museum professionals, and more. We want all science communicators from all walks of life to stand together and commit to doing their part to open science communication.
The world is full of people who do the work of science communication without the recognition or acceptance. When we acknowledge the variety of views & perspectives involved in communication of science, we can finally begin to build a truly inclusive community-of-practice with the potential to impact the world.

We hope that this letter starts conversations about what open science communication is and how it impacts open science efforts. How can each of us in our various silos reach past the barriers that keep us separated to build more connectivity within the entire science communication community? How can we invite more perspectives and skill-sets to join the community, and improve the resiliency of the field? Knowing that there are a variety of sub-disciplines within the broad umbrella of science communication, how can we be sure to learn from each other?
