The Association of Science Communicators (ASC) first came into existence as Science Talk Northwest in 2015. It was created by a group of scientists, communications professionals, researchers, and other experts who recognized the need for better science communication across disciplines and with non-scientists.
Plus, we wanted to hang out, geek out and have fun.
Every year, we organize a conference for scientists, journalists, celebrities, policy makers, students, and anyone else who loves science. This event includes networking opportunities, instructional workshops, and presentations on how to better communicate science to to everyone who needs it. So, everyone.
- 2017: The first Science Talk Northwest conference is held at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) in Portland. It’s a sell out.
- 2018: Science Talk Northwest went international and became Science Talk. We moved to the Oregon Convention Center for more space.
- 2019: Science Talk moved to its current in-person home at the Tiffany Center in Portland.
- 2020: In response to COVID-19, Science Talk went virtual.
- 2021: Science Talk stayed virtual in the ongoing global pandemic. We’re grateful for the scientists who created the tech that helps us connect safely.
- 2022: Yay for science and vaccines! Science Talk is held in a hybrid format, with folks attending live (and masked) from Portland and live online from across the world. Science Talk announced a name change to the Association of Science Communicators (ASC).
